About the Inskip-Norwood Recreation Center

Located just west of I-75 and north of I-640 adjacent to the Inskip Ballfields, the Inskip-Norwood Recreation Center serves not only the neighborhood, but the larger Knoxville community. Best known locally as a polling precinct, Inskip also provides space for a wide range of programming. Diverse partnerships with Sertoma Services, the Tennessee School for the Deaf, Sunshine Industries, Cerebral Palsy Services, and Breakthrough Corps Services make the Center a hub for accessible programming in the community.

Status

Construction was substantially complete as of June 4, 2020. Progress photos of the work can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

What Was Done

P&C Contracting is expected to begin construction February 3. The initial work will close the gymnasium for approximately one week to replace all three sets of doors to the gymnasium and construct level entrance pads (#24 below) at each of the rear doors. This work will make the rear entrances ADA compliant and provide access to the gymnasium through the remainder of the project as the front entrance will be closed.

The second part of the project will close the parking adjacent to the building, playground, front entrance, restrooms, office, and community room for approximately 10 weeks. Work includes:

  1. Reworking the parking area to provide code-compliant ADA parking spaces (#6 & #8 below)

  2. Constructing an elevated sidewalk along the parking area with stormwater features and curb ramps to provide an access route to the facility (#7, 9, 11, 12, 25, 30 below).

  3. Extending the front sidewalk and reworking the picnic area to be accessible (#15 & 16 below).

  4. Replacing the trash containers with new ADA-compliant units and relocating them along the accessible route (#19 & 31 below).

  5. Updating both the men’s and women’s restrooms to make all fixtures and accessories ADA-compliant.

  6. Installing automatic door openers on the main entrance doors.

  7. Replacing the water-fountain with a new ADA-compliant model.

  8. Reversing the door swing on the Community Room to make it accessible.

Impacts

This project has been coordinated with facility programs to try and minimize disruption. This work is not expected to impact programming though the main entrance and interior restrooms will be closed throughout most of the project. During the work, temporary access will be from the rear of the gymnasium and temporary restrooms will be located adjacent to the rear doors.
