Construction Update

ADA Improvements Project — Construction began October 11, 2021 and was completed in June 2023.

Dog Park Addition — The new dog park opened November 4, 2022.

About the Park

Located in South Knoxville just off Chapman Highway, Sam Duff Memorial Park was the former Young High School football and track facility. A 12-acre neighborhood park, Sam Duff includes a multipurpose field, playgrounds, picnic shelters, half-court basketball, tennis, pickleball, and a paved track.

What We’re Doing

Located just about 250 feet from the sidewalks along Chapman Highway and less than a quarter-mile from multiple KAT bus stops along Chapman, Sam Duff Park lays hidden from view down a small drive with poor visibility and no clear pedestrian areas. This project will provide a new accessible sidewalk connecting the existing Chapman Highway sidewalks and the adjoining business storefronts into the park. The project will also renovate the existing restroom building to make it accessible and provide heat so that the restroom can operate year-round.

Our Timeline & Impacts

Construction on the ADA Improvements is scheduled to begin mid-October 2021 and is anticipated to take approximately 7-9 months. Construction is expected to restrict the entrance drive to one lane through much of the project, but the main parking lot will be largely unaffected. Periodic temporary daytime closures of the entrance drive will occur to support paving activities and will be announced on this page.

The park restrooms will also close during much of the project; however, this closure coincides with the normal winter closure for these restrooms. As usual, an accessible portable toilet will be provided on-site for use by park patrons during the closure.
